Connecticut State Police and prosecutors examined the school, home, digital records, firearms history, and witness accounts. The prosecutor found no evidence of accomplices and closed the criminal investigation. The advisory commission examined school design, emergency response, behavioral health, and firearm safety.
Legal accountability
The perpetrator's death foreclosed prosecution. Separate civil cases held a gun manufacturer and conspiracy broadcaster financially accountable through settlements and verdicts; these cases addressed distinct legal conduct, not criminal responsibility for the attack itself.
Victims and community
Twenty children aged six or seven and six educators were killed. Staff members protected children, and families built foundations, advocacy efforts, and the Sandy Hook Permanent Memorial. Coverage should respect family preferences and avoid republishing intrusive records.
Prevention and aftermath
Connecticut enacted firearm, magazine, school-security, and behavioral-health measures. The commission recommended safer school design, multidisciplinary threat assessment, emergency preparedness, and stronger behavioral-health systems while cautioning against stigmatizing mental illness.
