Response and investigation

Investigators used surveillance, witness accounts, digital evidence, warning records, and the suspect's statements. The commission examined missed behavioral warnings, school radio and camera problems, campus security, sheriff's-office policy, and the failure of responding personnel to promptly confront the threat.

Legal accountability

The perpetrator pleaded guilty to 17 murders and 17 attempted murders in 2021. A penalty jury did not unanimously recommend death, and he received life without parole. A former school resource officer was acquitted of child-neglect and culpable-negligence charges in 2023.

Victims and community

Fourteen students and three educators were killed. Staff and students aided classmates under extreme conditions. Families and survivors became prominent advocates across differing policy positions, while the Parkland 17 Memorial Foundation works toward a permanent memorial.

Prevention and aftermath

Florida expanded school threat assessment, guardian options, emergency drills, mental-health funding, age restrictions for long-gun purchases, and a risk-protection-order process. The commission continues monitoring implementation and school safety.
